Joan Luck

Flute Player (1961 – 2019) & Trustee (Current)

Joan’s musical journey with the HCO, then known as the Hornchurch Orchestra, began in 1961 while she was training as a nurse at Oldchurch Hospital, Romford. It was here that she met her husband, Brian, marking the start of a beautiful partnership both in music and life—they have now been happily married for 60 years.

In the 1980s, Joan embraced a new direction in her career, becoming a theory teacher and piano accompanist for Havering Music School, where she has made a lasting impact on countless young musicians. Her passion for music extended beyond teaching; Joan conducted the Romford YMCA Orchestra and collaborated with the Romford Band and Red Triangle Operatic Society to lead annual Yuletide Concerts for the YMCA. These festive events were a highlight of the community calendar, drawing an audience of 400 people each year.

Joan’s dedication to music also led her to conduct a Wind Band in Barking, which gave numerous performances in Germany, strengthening cultural ties with Barking’s twin town, Witten. Additionally, she showcased her versatility as a pianist in her husband’s 17-piece dance band, adding a lively rhythm to many memorable performances.

Though Joan retired from providing piano accompaniment for students taking instrumental exams earlier this year, she continues to contribute to the Havering Music School with enthusiasm and dedication. A valued member of the HCO, Joan has played both flute and violin with the orchestra and remains an active participant, attending rehearsals weekly and generously serving tea and coffee during breaks, a small but very important gesture that reflects her enduring commitment to the musical community she loves. Joan is a Trustee of the Orchestra.
