It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of the violinist Laura Samuel. Laura died in November, aged 48.
Laura played the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with us in our concert in the Autumn of 2001. You can view the Programme here. Since 2012 you may well have seen her on the television leading the BBC Scottish Orchestra. Laura was born in London and studied at the Royal School of Music, her debut was at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon. Laura was a founder member of the well-known Belcea Quartet. Laura was also a member of the Nash Ensemble from 2010. She played the ‘Nissel’ Stradivari violin from 1731.
The BBC Scottish Orchestra shared a tribute on social media: ’Laura was an exceptional musician, leading the orchestra with insight and an indomitable spirit. Her unwavering character and generosity touched everyone who knew her, and the courage and composure she displayed during her illness was both inspiring and humbling.
’Laura will be deeply missed by us all and audiences across Scotland and beyond. The impact of her artistry and spirit will continue to resonate with the many lives she touched.’
